Creative Disciplines and the "how" of research

The discipline of writing is one of the growth areas in the humanities, attracting a substantial proportion of all research students to our universities. A considerable volume of work classified as research – especially doctoral degrees in creative writing - is being produced, but approaches to research remain fairly idiosyncratic. This workshop will involve participants in reading a small number of key articles on practice-led research and then discussing the values, logics and epistemological preliminaries of research so that they:

Creative nonfiction: ethical concerns and other issues

This asynchronous course links to the theme of this year's AAWP conference in November in Byron Bay.

After more than two decades of hoaxes and scandals perpetrated in the name of creative nonfiction, participants will survey current concerns and issues for writers of creative nonfiction, assess these in terms of what challenges and opportunities they offer for both writers and publishers, and look forward to possible future directions for the genre.

Related Areas - the ethics of publishing, writers' responsibilities

Disaster Dialogues: representations of trauma in word and image

The catastrophic natural events of 2011 drew attention (again) to the visual display of the suffering of others, most notably witnessed in the effects of the Japanese tsunami and Christchurch earthquake. Concurrently, the recent AAWP conference featured many papers concerned with representations of various forms and experiences of trauma, many of these papers making meaningful use of images (even if only for presentation purposes).

If you want to comment on the usefulness (or the uselessness) of a text, add an annotation. Share your knowledge around!
