Every supervision is individual, and depends on a free, interactive relationship between student and supervisor. The supervisor must be a friend, advisor (more than teacher: by half-way through the thesis the student should know more about the topic than the supervisor), friendly critic, and general supporter. By the stage of postgraduate study people have complicated lives, and the relationship between professional and pastoral help should never be underestimated.
