Philosophy of supervision:
I assume that in most cases the postgraduate student will eventually
know more than I on their particular topic; they will be the expert. I
aim to give them a sense that they are in control of their research and
their knowledge-making. However, I also understand that they need
careful direction (to key concepts or theorists or research that will
strengthen or enlarge their work) and often a helping hand in terms of
structuring their work schedule and certainly their writing progress. I
consider them independent scholars who will seek my help and I make
myself available whenever they want; given also a commitment to regular
meetings to discuss progress. I aim to have them write from the very
beginning of their candidacy so that this becomes habit and not a
burden. Finally I aim to be a genuine critical friend/ reader and I am
not afraid to be 'tough' when necessary.
